Fiber Rich Knowledge: Part 4

Fiber is essential to maintaining good health. So, we are discovering the fiber basics in the four part series of posts. We have already explored how much fiber one needs in a day and which foods can best provide us with the daily recommended amount of 20 to 35 grams. We learned that adding in fiber will cause you to have to drink more water since fiber acts like a sponge. One more fact that should be pointed out is that adding in fiber too quickly can cause digestive issues so please slowly add in your fiber until you reach your goal amount. In this article, we will briefly discuss the differences between soluble and insoluble fiber and some health benefits of maintaining a healthy dose of fiber in your diet.

Are you familiar with Power 90? Power 90, made by Beach Body, is a 90 day work out program designed get you in awesome shape in a short amount of time in the comfort of your own home. If you have no time to go to the gym or no desire, Beach Body provided a way to get into great shape that’s just between you and your DVD player. Quite some time ago, I owned Power 90. I loved the program and it truly did help me get into shape. At the time I was working out at a gym as well, but the 30 minute DVD program helped on days I could not get there or to get an added workout.

Grilling Comes Under Fire

There’s no evidence that grilling causes cancer. But cooking meat at the high temperatures you use to grill—as well as broil and fry—creates heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), compounds linked with some cancers.

Animal and laboratory studies suggest that HCAs may damage DNA and spur the development of tumors in cells of the colon, breast, prostate and lymph system.

What’s in your child’s lunchbox?

The biggest influence on how our children eat is you, the parent. That influence does not end with a packed lunch. We still need to be vigilant to provide healthy options even when processed, sugary, prepackaged foods are so much easier to pack. The 100 calorie cookie packs look to be a nice idea but they are loaded with sugar. Peanut butter and jelly is always a hit but jelly is packed with high fructose sugar. What kid doesn’t love the crunch of a bag of potato chips? Yet, chips contain high amounts of fat.
